« I need the mediation of the Other in order to be what I am » Jean Paul Sartre

« Hell is other people ». This reference to Jean Paul Sartre's ideas summarizes my felling by reading « The Metamorphosis » by Franz Kafka. Of course, there are many ways to interpret this novella. But, above all, it inspires me the self-destruction caused by the other people's gaze. When physical changes end up in self-destruction. When the inner self, the consciousness, the personality falls apart because we are not recognized any more by the other people's gaze.

The metamorphosis is the story of Gregor Samsa, a travelling salesman, who makes up metamorphosed into a « monstrous insect ». In fact, when Gregor wakes up, transformed into a scary insect, he doesn't sound afraid about his physical changes. Indeed, he tries to solve the practical problems imposed by his new body. He just wants to assume his professional responsibilities, his social inner self ! He only wants to be a son, a brother, an employee again ! If it depended only on himself, Gregor wouldn't change a thing. However, from the moment that his family, his immediate superior, the other people discover the metamorphosis, he loses his inner social self. So, he looses a part of his personality. Indeed, the inner social self is depends on the recognition of the others. It is our social character. Unfortunately, on other people's gaze, Gregor has become an insect. He is only a scary insect. The personality is a balance between mind and body. But, in his case, the balance is broken. Of course, he kept a consciousness within himself. Nevertheless, his physical aspect is gradually becoming hegemonic. His body shell is the only thing that matters to the others and especially to him. This is the myth of Narcissus. Little by little, he is deprived of all, even to live. He only survives locked up in a bedroom …

That's why, I consider «The metamorphosis » as an example of alienation and dehumanization. First of all, it's a model of alienation because Gregor seems emptied of himself. His one's own existence as a person doesn't matter anymore. He is physically still alive. At the same time, he is internally dying. He is becoming a shadow.

Then, I would like to speak about the concept of dehumanization. This novella reminds me the Jewish genocide during the World War II. We start by transforming the physical aspect of humans by dispossessing them of theirs clothes, hair, family jewels, muscles … Then, humans are mentally transformed by treating them like an animal without consciousness. Little by little, they lose confidence in themselves. They waste away. Dehumanized, they passively wait death. So, at the beginning, Gregor resists, fights against death whereas his father tries to kill him. But, he ends up letting himself die. He stops eating ! By the way, his sister, who can symbolizes resistance, end up giving up. So, this novella reminds me «
If this is a man » by Primo Levi. The resistance makes place to fatalism.of himself. I think he is emptied for the benefit of his family … . When he died, his sister blossoms !

Ultimately, Gregor changes physically and mentally. Thus, his family is metamorphoses too, above all his sister. But, I would like to leave you with a positive, a comical spin. Indeed, by reading my blog post, you probably wanting to hang yourself ! So, « The Metamorphosis » reminds me « Drop Dead Diva », a TV series. This is the story of a model who dies and rises from the dead as an obese person. She kept her consciousness ! But, can her family accepts her like that ? Like her on a different body or like a different person with a part of her old self ?

  2. I agree with our vision on dehumanization in the "metamorphosis", but I do not agree that it is the social that make him different. He is an insect, and he knows that. His family try to live with him even if he is different, they try to understand him (his sister brings him different types of food for instance). Gregor also understands that his diference will change his life : he cannot open the door, he cannot speak, he cannot transport himself... He acts indirectly on his family life more than his family directly or indirectly acts to his life. In fact, his social environnement has been metamorphosed because of him. His family looses its financial stability, her sister looses her hope and her dreams, his mother falls into depression... The metamorphose transforms everybody that is close to him. "Hell" is not the other and the social "strongest thoughts", but hell is what happened to him : it is undercontroled, absurd.

Nevertheless, it transforms them but it does not make them self-conscious, they hide that dead body from their view, they do not what to realize the price of existence. That seems to be the reason of their despair. When he died, they feel free, as they can began a new life, but they are not really living : it is a victory of ignorance.

That is cowardice, Gregor cannot accept his life as an insect, his family does not accept to look death (what he represents) in the eyes. They destroy their life because they do not want to look at it, they find an alibi ("Everything is because of him") but it is their fault : they do not want to accept self-consciousness, it is affraid them ! It is what Gregor represents, it is why they are afraid of him and they reasure themselves with the Gregor alibi (it is a monster, it won't happened to us so everything its ok for us, we won't die, we don't need to be responsible of our own actions).

So, do you think that this is society that rejects him, or that this is family's cowardice and no-self concious existence that makes them reject him ?

    1. Hi Alexander ! First of all, thank you to have reading my post. :)
Your point of view about Gregor's metamorphosis and the transformation of his family is really interesting and justified. It's obvious.
But, what I wanted to say is that his family doesn't really try to accept him. If, they had continued to have a normal behavior, may be (and I agree, it is almost impossible), he would back to his old self ... His family becomes progressively coward. They are not able to look beyond the physical aspect of Gregor, their son, brother !
To answer you, I don't think that the society or his family is guilty. But, it is a mixture thereof. Man is a "social animal". So, all we do is at least partly determinate by the social norms. But, we can still take a step back in order to being more human, more independent, fair !

I hope you're satisfied by my answer !

  3. Hi Fiona, fist of all I want to congratulate you for your comment and analysis! it seemed enriching and very interesting because my analysis was quiet different.

As I was reading the text metamorphosis, it reminded me to what had been said in class about Kierkegaard. Specifically when he explains that people sometimes try to be someone different from what they really are and that when looking to be another he gets frustrated and desperate because he cannot archive that goal.

I hold this because on one hand, I feel that he does accept his new status or roll of insect, but on the other hand , it seems that he is actually giving up what he could have really been... On other words, I thought that he is becoming sort of an object and he does nothing about it.. he is conformed to be a kind of living object, and he is settling down for so little in comparison with his potential .

In addition, I found a direct relation between the text under analysis and aesthetic existence, described by Kierkegaard, due to this way to relate to thing as a body..kind of like a couch potato

    1. Hi Lucia ! First of all I want to thank you for your reply :)
Your answer is really enriching. I agree with you when you say that Gregor is giving up, is becoming an object. According to me, if his family had accept him (and not only partially), things might have been different. I still believe all you need to succeed, is support. In fact, this is our family or friends who can bring us this motivation most part of the time. Gregor don't have a leg to stand on ... So, he is giving up !

Finally, your conclusion is rather original but, very good ! I think we can see the idleness of many people caused by our new way of life !
