Pornography is the future . . . and haters gonna hate !

I’ve seen many posts about the woman condition in front of a society ruled by men. And I think that it is important to not forget nowadays the position we have in our woman condition, because of this complete absurd pressure that puts on us. But there is a soft ambiguity in the arguments I’ve red that I need to discuss.

Lot of feminists seem to oppose men and women as two class in a fight where men are the oppressors. I cannot agree with them on this point because I would have a more systematic approach on the gender problem. I really think that men are as we are, victims of  the speech that have the society about gender and sexuality. But we usually think that it is more easy to be a man in our society because the majority of the structures have been built by men. So they're home aren't they ? Actually, I doubt that, and this is a very dishonest posture, maybe the most blind we can have on the problem. Gender is an existential problem, and every human is limited by it.

In fact, I've worked a lot on pornography, something that we make as one of the biggest destructor of the image of the woman, certainly because it build a very awful image of what women should be but also because we are extremely sexists, and we never payed attention about how men can be hurted in the pornography too. That’s why I’m here to defend what pornography as one of the greatest reflect of our society, can add to the struggle for the emancipation of the gender and the sexuality.

Pornography : a good idea to liberate sexuality but stucked in a prison of gender

Men and women are alienated because of their gender socially constructed and the sexuality made by it. We just have to start from a very simple point : the actor is reduced to his penis and his sexual identity is reduced to the masculine gender according to which, man takes pleasure from the body of the woman (and that’s why he’s most of the time not paid) ; whereas the actress is reduced to her body which needs to appear outrageously “feminine”, and this feminine is reduced to the submission of the male sexe by “cumshot” (and that’s why she’s paid a lot, because she is soiled). But men and women are not victims of pornography, they are victims of the social vision of what is sexuality and what is a man and a woman in front of it.

Men as actors are maybe victims in the most vicious way in this process, in the sense where their victimisation is subscribed  to their male character which make the pornography as a way to simply “empty their balls”. The actor cannot play in gay films without seeing his virility and masculinity being discredited. The “I do it for the ass” means that this “ass” has to be a woman one. Furthermore, the man is only presented in the face of his penis, a phallic form which emerges from the body, which aggresses. The violence of this reification, of the man as a sexual object is very shocking because the man is designated by his penis in erection. Finally, men in society as in pornography are defined as aggressives, and the relationship with them can just be a relation of strength.  The social construction of the masculinity and virility is based on the duration of an erection with a state of non-feeling. The man in society does not suffer, he does not cry, he is strong. Here, in pornography, we do not see his reactions, his feeling or his pleasure (it is extremely rare to see the face of the man, it is mostly cut) but only the strength of his arms which hold the body of a woman, and his hard penis, penetrating her.

For the actresses, the situation is different because they don’t suffer the same oppression. They are victims of the vision that have society on the pornographic activity which would be particularly demeaning and depreciatory for two principals reasons : (1) the social construction of the wise and well-behaved woman who has to be a model of vertu. All the womankind needs to look like a virgin and cannot have any sexual desire or even masturbating. (2) The social construction of the “respect” and the woman who “respect herself” in not going soil her body in utilizing it as an ejactulator support. In this way, more than a reflect of the society, the pornography allows to reaffirm the gender in reducing the woman as submissive and the men as dominator and aggressive.

How should we see an opened-door to the gender and sexuality emancipation in Pornography tho ?

What is important finally, is not to say that pornography is a fail of what could have been a sexual liberation, but to know that if the project has failed, it is because of its environment and not because of the idea in itself (to film sexuality). As a matter of fact, it would be interesting to imagine a pornography able to exist by itself without being a victim of the society but an actress in the society to liberate the sexuality from the prison of gender. According to Ruwen Ogien the massive diffusion of pornography could diminuate the social injustice : it permits to recognize all the practices and the desire which exist and give them dignity.

This is actually the fight of the producer Erika Lust, mother and pro-sexe feminist who has a diploma in the gender study. She explains that 56% of the girls between 15 and 18 years are disgusted by pornography. This for her, is a real problem because pornography has to create some desire ALSO in the woman spectator. That’s why, we need to get out this outrageous construction of femininity (and also masculanity) : blond hair, big tits, short clothes etc. “Desperate babysitters, easy girl, the woman is an object for the satisfaction of men’s desire” and this is not because of men or of the pornography according to her, but this is just because pornography is a speech on the sexuality, the masculinity and the femininity that have been only gave by macho men, imprisoned in the social construction of the gender. Indeed, this old masculine speech is not in tune with the woman position in our society anymore, or even with the homosexual, pansexual, bisexual sexuality.

For that, I can only invite you to reconsider your opinion about pornography (if it was negative) because I really think that we can find in it a real liberation of the sexuality which have been imprisoned by the social vision of gender. Also, I will add that if we have to struggle against the prison of the gender, this is not simply a woman or a man fight, because it would reduce us again to our sexes, but above all : a human fight.

  4. Hi Clara,

Thank you for this post. You touch on something that many people fail to mention, and that is how patriarchal ideals hurt both men and women. The patriarchy supports a vision of men who are stoic and powerful, and those who fall short of these characteristics are not considered "real men." Of course, this same argument applies to men in the porn industry as well, as they are expected to always be domineering (unless its BDSM but thats makes up a minority of the porn that is produced).

Despite the increasing numbers of women watching porn, the reality is still that a majority of porn consumers are heterosexual men, and because of this, a lot of porn that is produced caters to their wants, which tend to focus on the female's blatantly physical attributes rather than the male's. I think it'll take awhile before we see widespread shifts in the sort of porn content that is produced, but definitely an interesting development to consider.

  5. Hi Clara,
in my country any kind of pornography is forbidden by law, but everyone watches it on the internet anyway haha. That plus what I've seen in my exploration made me believe porn is no good for feminist liberation for long. However as you argued greatly in this post, it isn't necessarily depicting sexual behavior which causes the problem - rather, it shows how we think of sexuality, only in an extreme fashion. I agree that porn we have aren't for girls. Though there are attempts to create one for women spectators, and I anticipate them to change the scenery of porn industry, because they are reflections of the society as you said so, but not only; I think they also reinforces the distorted expectation of people watching them.

  7. Hola !

What a subject, illustrating gender inequalities by pornography is certainly not what I would expected but after your explanations, why not...
I don't know if I'm against or for pornography, I'm not into it. Pornography is not sex in my opinion, it's action movies.
At least it was what I thought. I don't watch it because it is agressive, and because I know how sensitive I am to this kind of stuff about sexuality, relationships roles, how I have to act, who I have to be...
But ... what if pornography was more permissive, our societies more open about it. What if... I was more permissive with myself. I know since my early age that I'm a submitted victim of gender roles, I know that I've internalized codes and behaviours.
You just made me rethink of my own pleasure. It probably won't change anything in the long-run but I hope that with time and stimulations like yours I will free myself
My comment is not useful at all, it was just a little thanks from a growing up woman to another who seems to be at an higher step.

Maybe I should watch some, I'm curious. Maybe there is some that have scenarii, deep characters that I can relate to...

    1. Hola Clem !

I'm really glad to read your comment. Actually, before my big work on pornography for my course of sociology last year, I did not watch porn at all. I discovered it when I was 12, by a random mistake and that was awfull for me, disgusting and agressive. I did just watch one. But since I've worked on it, on the "job" of actors and actresses in this industry, and I've really whatched it, I totally changed my mind. Not that I defend the shitty pornography we know nowadays, but the idea of filming sexuality to break all the construction we're stuck in. Pornography is a so good mirror of the gender prison of our society, and as is, it can be a liberator to it. If you're interested and if you understand well french, I can send you my work on it and maybe you'll understand more my point and how you too can be interested by pornography.

  8. Hi Clara,

Your post was super interesting, so thank you! Sorry as I know this isn't directly related but, in light of your argument about pornography, I was interested in what your opinion was on prostitution. And whether you think that sex which is purely transactional in a sense is a form of sexual liberation can also provide an opportunity to diminish social constructs? The idea of prostitution as immoral, particularly on behalf of the female, is one which has long pervaded popular discourse, and similarly to the porn industry, works on a level of the woman as existing only as the object of male desire. With increasing sexual liberation in a public sphere, it will be interesting to see if societal attitudes become more accepting of prostitution, and whether women begin to involve themselves more in the buying of sex.
