The desperate Bonnie and Clyde

- Badlands, Terrence Malick -

This is the story of a couple of vagrants, Kit and Holly. In their Cadillac, they are plunged in a trip of despair and hope.

At the beginning, Kit has a boring life of garbage man. When he is fired he has the hope to build a love story with Holly. But Kit is despair by Holly’s father reluctance, his only one hope to take Holly with him is to kill her father, what he does. That can show Kit’s determination in order to sever with this despair, he can does everything for her.
After this murder and during their escape, this is like a new life and a new hope for Kit. When he was garbage man, his life wasn’t really interesting. But with his escape, Kit has the impression of exist. In Dakota people speak about us, and at the end we can say that he’s happy to be famous. Added to that, he has the impression of exist because he has a goal in his life: escape to the police in order to live a romance with Holly. We can prove that with the end of the movie.
When Holly decide to let him and decide to stop her escape, Kit loses the goal of his life and he falls back in despair. That’s why he decides to turn himself in to the police because he knows that he’ll passed his last moments of his life with Holly. Kit knows that he’ll be executed, but he doesn’t want to relive a boring existence. When he escapes it’s like if he runs after the hope of a real life with Holly, and at the same time his escape is something that he likes because he’s feeling alive.

Holly appears gullible, she doesn’t look like very sad when his father is killed and she doesn’t think about implications of her escape with a criminal. For me in this movie Holly isn’t free. When she lives with her father I consider that she isn’t free because this one prevents her to see Kit. I don’t know if she has or not the hope to live with Kit because she doesn’t fight to see him. After when she escapes with Kit, she is under his orders, she just follows him.
I think it’s because she is young and innocent. She’s only 15 years old, so when she was with her father she obeys because this is what a girl of his age must do. And after she obeys to Kit because she loves him, she is like a little girl who admire someone. Her only one hope is to live with Kit. Kit needs that, he needs to have a girlfriend who follow him, when he hadn’t girlfriend he doesn’t this travel he was just a banal garbage man. When Holly let him, Kit Turn himself in to the police, maybe he does this escape for her, he might searches to impress her and want to show that he can protect her.

But, does Kit only tries to escape the police, or does Kit tries to escape his despair and can do everything for this ?
